چکیده

Sixteen high-resolution marine aerosol (Na, SO4 ) records from spatially distributed International Trans Antarctic Scientific Expedition (ITASE) ice cores spanning the last ~200 years from the Pine Island-Thwaites and Ross drainage systems and the South Pole are used to examine sources (sea spray and frost flowers) and transport pathways of marine aerosols into West Antarctica. Factors contributing to the amount of marine aerosols transported inland include sea ice extent, the presence of open water features (polynyas, leads), wind strength and direction, and the strength and positioning of low pressure systems. Analysis of SO4 / Na ratios indicates that frost flowers can contribute significantly (40%) to the Na budget of Antarctic ice cores. Higher Na concentrations in the Ross drainage system may result from greater production of marine aerosols related to frost flowers in the Ross Sea region in association with greater sea ice extent and larger open water areas. Significant positive correlations of sea ice extent and the Na time series exist in some regions of West Antarctica. Higher wind speeds in winter and higher Na concentrations when SLP is

Tropical Pacific Influence on the Source and Transport of Marine Aerosols to West Antarctica

The climate of West Antarctica is strongly influenced by remote forcing from the tropical Pacific. For example, recent surface warming over West Antarctica reflects atmospheric circulation changes over the Amundsen Sea, driven by an atmospheric Rossby wave response to tropical sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies. Here, it is demonstrated that tropical Pacific SST anomalies also influence th...

Sources of Nitrate and Ozone in the Marine Boundary Layer of the Tropical North Atlantic

During the period April 1989 through December 1990, °3 concentrations in the marine boundary layer at Barbados, West Indies, show a pronounced seasonal cycle. Daily averaged values in the winter and spring often fall in the range of 25-35 ppbv for periods of several days, and they seldom fall below 20 ppbv. In contrast, during the summer, values typically fall in the range of 10-20 ppbv. During...

A meridional profile of the chemical composition of submicrometre particles over the East Atlantic Ocean: regional and hemispheric variabilities

Within the framework of SWEDARP (Swedish Antarctic Program) 92/93 an aerosol sampling program was carried out on board of M/S Polarbjörn which carried staff and material to the Nordic Antarctic field exercises during the Austral summer 1992/1993. The cruise started 11 November 1992 from Oslo, went via Cape Town to Antarctica, and then back to Cape Town where the ship arrived on 4 January 1993. ...

Antarctic new particle formation from continental biogenic precursors

Over Antarctica, aerosol particles originate almost entirely from marine areas, with minor contribution from long-range transported dust or anthropogenic material. The Antarctic continent itself, unlike all other continental areas, has been thought to be practically free of aerosol sources. Here we present evidence of local aerosol production associated with melt-water ponds in continental Anta...
